On Wednesday, August 18, 1999, Director Carlos Alvarez of the Miami-Dade Police Department will present State Representative Carlos Valdes with a Florida Police Chiefs Association Legislative Award
for 1999, and a Miami-Dade Police Department Certificate of Appreciation in recognition for his efforts during the 1999 Legislative Session on behalf of public safety and effective law enforcement. The presentation will take place at the Miami-Dade Police Department Headquarters Building at 9105 NW 25th Street at 11:00 A.M.
In 1999, as in previous years, Representative Valdes has championed the causes advanced by the Miami- Dade Police Department and professional law enforcement associations and has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to protecting Florida’s citizens and visitors. For example, in 1997, in support of law enforecment and against great odds, Representative Valdes sponsored House Bill 241, which abolished the Sentencing Guidelines and established the Florida Criminal Punishment Code. Now, because of this accomplishment criminals are receiving the sentences they deserve and serious crime is declining for the first time in many years. Representative Valdes also vigorously supported the interests of the law enforecement profession on other issues whenever possible by speaking out in committee hearings or on the House Floor and providing advice and assistance on countless occasions during the 1999 Legislative Session.
